Summary

Interrupting his cycle on the Beatitudes for the feast of 25 March, Dimitrios Panagopoulos presents the Annunciation as the greatest of the feasts and the root from which the others grow, since none could be kept without the conception that precedes them. Following Saint Gregory of Neocaesarea and Joseph Bryennios, he traces the festal cycle backward from Pentecost to that root. He calls the day the enemy's defeat: Satan never conceived that God would become man, a mystery veiled in Genesis 3:15 and misread by Eve, and God concealed the Theotokos in the Holy of Holies. With Saint Ignatius the God-bearer, Saint Andrew of Crete, and Saint Gregory of Nyssa he expounds the greeting “Rejoice, full of grace,” showing the Virgin as the second Eve whose obedience reversed the first disobedience, and he defends the Orthodox iconography of the feast.

Tonight, with God's help, I will not continue the series on the Beatitudes. I will make a small parenthesis and speak about the great Feast of the Annunciation, which our Holy Church celebrates on Sunday.

By the forbearance of our good God, we have had the opportunity to speak about the matter of the Annunciation before. But as you know, there are others who have since come on the scene, and they too ought to hear something about it. Besides, repetition, as the divine Paul says, wearies the speaker, not the listener. I do not know whether the matter of the Annunciation has ever occupied you as a religious feast. Because the Annunciation does occupy us, but as a national feast; the spiritual Annunciation is pushed aside, and the discussion becomes one about a material annunciation. For us Orthodox, and specifically for us Greeks, the Feast of the Annunciation has a twofold meaning; as a nation this day is significant for us, and as Christians we hold this day to be significant. The one was the day that became the cause, and we were set free by the grace of our Most Holy Theotokos, beginning from Agia Lavra of Kalavryta, and we were liberated from the material yoke.

The other is again through the same person, our Most Holy Theotokos, through whom we were liberated from the spiritual yoke, from Satan. The one starting point is at Agia Lavra, and the other starting point is at Nazareth.

The religious feast comes before the national feast; it existed first both in magnitude and in time. So I would like to speak tonight about the Annunciation, because it has many aspects, especially concerning the manner of the conception, the person, and the purpose more generally.

If I were to say that the day of the Annunciation, as a feast, is the greatest feast, and that it is the starting point and the root of all the feasts, I would not be far from the truth. For how can you celebrate a birth if you do not celebrate a conception? How will you celebrate a baptism, a crucifixion, a burial, a resurrection, if the conception does not come first?

It is the greatest and the most beautiful feast, and as the holy people of God say, this is how we too ought to receive it.

Saint Gregory of Neocaesarea says concerning all the feasts: we ought to offer all feasts and hymns to God in the manner of sacrifices, with hymns, with sacrifices, with feasts, offering sacrifice to God, and first of all of them, the Annunciation of the Theotokos.

For the Annunciation to her who is full of grace has become for us the beginning of all good things. From there all good things begin. The precious dispensation of our Saviour, His divine and supramundane teaching, begins from the Annunciation.

Another Father speaks of this ladder I mentioned to you, where each feast depends on the one before it, and all of them have their starting point and their root — like a plant, like a trunk — in the Annunciation. This is the great Joseph Bryennios. He says: "For just as the root of a plant is recognized as the cause of the trunk and the leaves and the branches, and of the blossoms and the fruits." As he puts it, a tree puts out leaves, fruit, and so on.

And none of these can appear apart from it; without the root there can be no trunk, there can be no leaves, there can be no fruit. So it is with the feast: apart from this one, that is, without the Feast of the Annunciation, none of those that spring from it appears; no feast can come forward unless this one exists as a root.

And let us consider carefully, let us pay attention: Pentecost is celebrated because the Ascension came before it as its forefeast. We would not have Pentecost if there were no Ascension. And the Ascension is celebrated because of the Resurrection; the One who rose is the One who ascended.

The Resurrection, because of the Crucifixion, someone died and rose; the Crucifixion, because of Palm Sunday; Palm Sunday, because of the raising of Lazarus; the raising of Lazarus, because of the Transfiguration; the Transfiguration, because of Theophany; Theophany, because of the Meeting of the Lord in the Temple; the Meeting, because of the Nativity of Christ; the Nativity of Christ, because of the Annunciation.

The root, the starting point, is the Annunciation. From there everything begins.

I would have you know that the Annunciation has been buried, and it stands now only at the level of the belly, and people ask what one eats on the Annunciation, nothing beyond that. And yet it was from this feast that Satan himself fled in person.

The Annunciation equals Satan's Waterloo.

Satan could never have imagined that God would become man. Nor could he ever have conceived that God would come forth from a woman. This he could not do, for all his pretending to be clever. For all his pretending to know everything.

These things they reasoned, and they were deceived. It says so in the second chapter of the Wisdom of Solomon, exactly there where it speaks of how the devil looked upon Christ in the world.

"Let us put him to the test with a shameful death. Let us see how gentle and forbearing he is" — so that from this he could tell whether this man really was God.

He understood it only when it could no longer do him any good. He raised Him up on the Cross and said, come down. I will not come down now. Now I will fasten you too to the Cross, and you along with Hades. My beloved, the matter of the Annunciation is not simply something that happened on the twenty-fifth of March, one thousand nine hundred and seventy-nine years ago.

Like a tree, the Annunciation stands planted in Paradise. If we could set the Annunciation before you as a tree and shake it, we would see that its roots are in Paradise. About this very moment of the Annunciation, that a woman would conceive and give birth to God, there was already a conversation in Eden, when there were two human beings there and Satan.

Those of you who study will find this incident in Genesis, chapter three, verse fifteen. There, when God has Satan standing before Him, He threatens him through the seed of the woman.

“I will put enmity between you and your seed, and the seed of the woman. He shall crush your head, and you shall strike His heel.” It speaks of a woman and of the woman’s seed, saying that the seed of the woman will crush the head of Satan.

And Satan will bite him, this seed of the woman, he will bite him on the heel. Eve, who heard this exchange, thought that she was that woman, the one who would give birth to the avenger.

That is exactly why she named her first child Cain, a name that means acquisition, obtaining. But she had obtained nothing except a murderer. She was not that woman. The woman was another, the one Paul speaks of in Galatians four, verse four, which we read on the night of the Nativity in the epistle reading.

“When the fullness of time had come, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the law,” and so on.

From that time on, God spoke about this strange conception and this paradoxical birth. Because, as we know, here He is speaking of something contrary to nature — the very thing that some people today stumble over. He says: a woman will give birth; the seed of the woman shall crush the head of the serpent. But a woman has no seed; the seed belongs to the man.

The man sows and the woman brings forth. She is like a field that is sown. Abraham, it says, begot Isaac. It does not say that Sarah begot Isaac. Isaac begot Jacob. It does not say that Rebecca begot him. And Jacob begot Judah and his brothers. It does not say that Rachel begot them.

This shows that something strange was going to take place. Satan holds on to this. Satan heard it. Years went by. The Scriptures and the prophecies began to be written down. And he reads in Isaiah, behold, the Virgin shall conceive in her womb and shall bear a son, and so on.

Ah, so God has not forgotten. He has not forgotten. And Satan takes measures, so that there would be no virgin woman left anywhere. I dare to say that the corruption of our own day is nothing compared to the corruption that existed back then, when Christ came into the world.

God outwitted him. He hid her from him inside the Holy of Holies for eleven years, from the age of three. Then He brought her out and gave her a protector over her, an elderly man, respected, honourable, an upright and virtuous elder. And in this way He outwitted Satan. Saint Ignatius the God-bearer, writing a letter to the Philippians,

writes to Satan. Perhaps that way of putting it is not quite right. He turns his letter and speaks to him personally, and tells him that he is a fool, for all his playing the clever one, because he was taking measures so that there would be no virgins left, and therefore what God had said back then would never come to pass.

Just as today Satan stage-manages his schemes against humanity — but those who belong to Christ will not fall into his hands. Let him hear this one more time from this pulpit, because he is certainly present here. Listen to what he writes to him.

Many things escape your notice. Many things, he tells him, slip past you, for all your playing the clever one. And he lists them one by one. The virginity of Mary. How did she remain a virgin, at the very time when you were making sure there would be no virgins left? The paradoxical birth.

She gave birth in such a wondrous manner. I do not know whether you are aware that our Most Holy Theotokos gave birth without labor pains. This was because she conceived without pleasure: she conceived without pleasure and gave birth without pain. And Isaiah foresaw this 850 years before Christ and writes in his final chapter: "Before the pangs of labour came upon her, she gave birth to a male child." So then, there is that strange and wondrous birth — how her body remained untouched. That is, how she gave birth and still remained intact, a virgin. And the leading star, the star in the east — how did that star come, who gave it word, what part did it play? You never understood it.

The Magi who brought the gifts, who brought gold, who brought frankincense, who brought myrrh. Do you know how to interpret them, what they meant, why they were worshipping this little child? You do not know. That escaped you. The Archangel's greeting to the Virgin, the Rejoice, full of grace, did you understand it? You did not understand it.

The paradoxical conception of a Virgin who was betrothed, not married, betrothed.

The proclamation of the child Forerunner concerning the One born of the Virgin. You remember that the Forerunner, from within his mother's womb, leapt for joy and greeted the Most Holy Theotokos when she went up to the hill country of Judah. Did you understand anything, he says to him, of that exchange between the two of them? No.

And the leaping in the womb at the One already beheld beforehand — the unborn child sensing Him in advance — no, you didn't understand that either. The hymns of the angels over the newborn Child: "Glory to God in the highest," and the rest. The shepherds' good tidings — shepherds go out and preach that the Redeemer has been born. Herod's fear that his kingdom is being taken away from him.

Did you understand anything about Herod's fear? The decree that killed the infants, the order that the children be slaughtered. Well, did you understand it? No. The departure into Egypt. That God should flee and go into Egypt. Do you understand that? You do not understand it.

You would have killed Herod. But God did the lesser thing, He went into Egypt and let Herod die a natural death. And then the return from there to His own place: He stayed there and came back again, and you did not understand that either.

Infant swaddling clothes. Who is wrapped in them? God. Did you understand it? No.

The human census, did you grasp it? No. Being fed with milk: how does God drink milk? Did you understand it? No. Bearing the name of a father who did not beget Him. Did you understand that? Is this not the son of the carpenter? He is, but only as He is supposed to be; in fact He is not. You did not grasp that either.

A manger—God in a manger—because there was no room. No room for whom? For Him who fashioned the whole universe, there is now no place. No human preparation whatsoever; growth as advancement—God growing like little children, like any human being.

Human words, and hunger, thirst, walking the roads, weariness, the bringing of sacrifices. Then circumcision, then baptism. And who is it that goes through all this? God. Did you understand any of it? Not a thing. The voice of God over the one being baptized: "This is my beloved Son." You did not understand that either. And then, from every side, the witnesses come: the testimony of the Spirit, the voice of the Father from above, and the voice of John the Prophet, which points ahead to the Passion by calling Him the Lamb.

This is the Lamb of God. "Lamb" means a young sheep that is going to be slain — and he was slain — to give his blood for our salvation. You saw the working of one sign after another, healings of every kind, a rebuke that belonged to the Master alone, commanding the sea and the winds, "Peace, be still!" — evil spirits put to flight, and you saw yourself twisted in torment by the power of the One who had shown himself, held up for display, with nothing left that you could do.

He shames Satan, he makes him look useless, because in truth, cunning as he is, and for all the measures he took to prevent what God had said from happening, God by His wisdom went right past him. And this is why, even today, Satan hates the Most Holy Theotokos more than he hates Christ.

Go up to some Protestant, to a Jehovah's Witness woman, just one. You will hear them speak of the Most Holy Theotokos in the cheapest possible way.

In the cheapest possible way: a woman, well, she is just a woman. No, she is the woman. A virgin, well, she is just a virgin. No, she is the Virgin. The prophet says the Virgin. Behold, the Virgin, he says. He does not say, behold, a virgin, one virgin among all the rest.

The Virgin. That definite article belongs to her alone, just as it does with Christ: I am the light, I am the life, I am the way. Those articles claim the person entirely; outside of Him there is no light, no life, no way, nothing at all. That is why I say the Annunciation is Satan's Waterloo, and why he hates the Theotokos. The one who records the Annunciation is Luke. And the Annunciation to the Most Holy Theotokos is actually the second one in order.

The first one is the annunciation of the Honorable Forerunner. “And in the sixth month he was sent” — Elizabeth was six months along. That is when Gabriel was sent, and he spoke with our All-Holy Lady, and what happened, happened. An angel was sent, and he is called Gabriel.

I do not know whether you know what the name Gabriel means. Gabriel means God and man. God and man, that is the meaning of Gabriel. That is why He sent the fitting person for the fitting role, so that even by the archangel's very name He would be speaking of what was about to take place.

One of the Fathers of the Church, Saint Sophronios in particular, says this: «For this very reason I myself, Gabriel, have been sent to you, the Virgin.» That is: this is why I, Gabriel, am the one who comes. «So that by my very name I may declare to you» — in other words, so that by my name itself I may make it plain to you — «that He who is born of you, the all-pure Virgin, is God and man.» That is, the One who will be born from you will be God and man — and that is exactly what my own name means. That, he says, is why they sent me.

For the name Gabriel, when interpreted, proclaims both God and man. Although there were many angels in heaven—what other angels were there?—He chose Gabriel and did not will to send any of the others. “He sent me,” Gabriel says, “in this particular case.”

Now, the first words the angel said to the Most Holy Theotokos were, Rejoice, full of grace, as you all know. How can this be interpreted? As you know, she herself reacted; she did not simply accept this, and a little further on she says a few things that I will tell you.

At this point I would rather not say anything of my own, but give you the view of a great man of our Church, Saint Andrew of Crete, on this greeting, Rejoice, full of grace. Rejoice, full of grace, the Lord is with you. Rejoice, instrument of joy, that is what he calls her, an instrument, through whom the condemnation of the curse was undone, because the Most Holy Theotokos stands in the place of Eve.

Eve by her disobedience threw us down; the Theotokos by her obedience raised us up again, just as Christ stands in the place of Adam, which is why Paul calls Him the last Adam in First Corinthians, in the fifteenth chapter.

“And the rightful claim of joy was brought in to take its place” — where there had been sorrow, the rightful claim of joy was introduced instead. And so Gregory of Neocaesarea, keeping the feast, adds: “Hail, you who are full of grace, for through you joy is bestowed upon all creation, and the human race receives back its dignity.” And the author of the Akathist Hymn — you will remember, among the first ‘Rejoice’ verses, in the hymn that begins ‘An archangel was sent from heaven’ — there he says: “Rejoice, for through you the curse shall vanish; Rejoice, for through you joy shall shine forth.” That is to say: Rejoice, you who will drive sorrow away from the human race; it will no longer go down to Hades as a captive.

And you will bring joy to the human race. Saint Gregory of Nyssa, in the same spirit, says this: "Rejoice, you who are full of grace, you whose ancestor Eve..." — he is explaining the very thing I was telling you — "...having transgressed the law, received the sentence that she would bear her children in sorrow. But to you belongs the invitation to rejoice. She gave birth to Cain, and so gave birth to murder and envy." She did not give birth to the Redeemer. "You will bear a Son who gives life and incorruption. Rejoice, therefore" — rejoice, then, and dance for joy — "rejoice, and trample down the head of the serpent. For the curse has ceased, corruption has been done away with, all that was gloomy has withered, and all that is bright is in full bloom." Beautiful words. Words of the Holy Spirit, set and placed exactly where they ought to be.

Then the angel says to the Most Holy Theotokos, "Do not be afraid, Mary." Do not be afraid, Mary, because, as you know, she is pondering within herself and saying, "What sort of greeting is this?" What is this sweet-sounding speech, as we would put it?

Because, of course, the words are flattering: «Rejoice, O full of grace.» They are flattering words. Yet she weighed them with great prudence and chastity of mind, and the text says: «She was pondering the greeting, wondering what sort of greeting this might be — whether it was something out of place and lewd, the way a man speaks to a young girl, or whether it was divine, since the remembrance of God had also been raised in the greeting.»

Besides the doctrinal side, this also has a moral significance. Because if Eve had headed off the conversation with the devil before it ever started, we would not have had the Fall. And both women and men, because of that original unchaste, seductive conversation of the evil one, fall and often become victims. And not only they — whole families do.

Accept no such conversation at all. But there it is, flattery gets to us. You see a mother now with three or four children, and someone says a word to her, a sweet word, and walks her home. She ought to turn around with her bag and strike him in the face; instead she often gives way, and often she falls.

She stood in exactly the opposite way. She says to herself, who is this? Keeping in mind the old story, just as we also keep that old story in mind, of the first Eve and of the second Eve, the Most Holy Theotokos. And we know the failure of the first, and we know the success of the second.

We have an obligation to resist, to say no. Unfortunately, back then the exchange of words took place, and the wheel took her under. She, though, stands firm here and says. Have you noticed what the Akathist Hymn says? "An archangel, foremost in rank, was sent from heaven." Why foremost in rank? Because he is not an apostate.

Take heed of who I am. Hearken, O daughter, and see; incline your ear.

Listen to what I am about to tell you, and look at where I am coming from. This is where the scepter comes in, the one that Orthodox iconography gives him in the icon of the Annunciation. Never buy an icon with a lily; that is of papal origin.

Always with a scepter. The correct Annunciation is the one displayed outside the Metropolis of Athens. When you pass by, look at the Annunciation on the outside, in mosaic, and you will see the archangel holding the scepter.

He comes from the royal court, an envoy sent from God. "Hear, O daughter" — listen to what I am about to tell you — "and see": look where I am coming from. That is why the hymn says there, "An angel, the first in rank among them, was sent from heaven" — from heaven, not from the earth.

The other one appeared through the serpent, from the earth; this one was sent from heaven. For us this is something serious, and I thought I should bring out its colors for you. Now, in her humility, she cannot accept that she is capable of anything so lofty.

Because that is where a person's ascent begins.

"In humility, the things that are lofty; in poverty, the things that are rich" — as our Church says. Never let your mind tell you that you are worthy of anything. Always say that you are unworthy, even if in fact you are worthy. Because even if you are worthy, you are not worthy through any merits of your own; the gifts God gave you are on loan. And so you must think humbly of yourself, and God will find you wherever you are — because He looks down upon the earth to show Himself strong for those who have humility in their heart, and a heart made perfect toward Him.

In any case, she is closed up, she is afraid, and the archangel steps in and says, "Do not be afraid, Mary." It is as though he is explaining to her what is happening here, and again I borrow the judgment of Saint Andrew of Crete.

And so he says: "You have found grace with God," a grace that Sarah did not receive. Sarah, the wife of Abraham, was not granted a grace like yours. "A grace that Rebecca did not know," Rebecca did not know such grace either, and he explains further down why.

Rachel did not know this either, this «you have found grace»; nor was the renowned Anna, the mother of Samuel, counted worthy of it. Nor Peninnah, the woman set against her, Elkanah's other wife. These women too were barren, and they gave birth. Just as Sarah gave birth, and Rebecca was barren, and Rachel as well — all of them gave birth. But in giving birth they also lost their virginity.

But here you both gave birth and did not lose your virginity. So now you stand apart from them all. You have found, he says, a grace of a different kind. "All those who were shown to be mothers though they had been childless" — they were childless, they were barren, and they too became mothers. "But along with that they cast off their virginity." They cast off their barrenness, yes; they became mothers who bore children — but in doing so they lost their virginity as well.

But you, while being a mother, will keep your virginity untouched — no one can take it from you. So do not be afraid; you have found grace with God, a grace that no one from the beginning of the ages has ever found, except you. And Saint Gregory of Nyssa says this same thing in his own writings, in his own way.

Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found grace with God. You were made beautiful beyond all creation, you were made radiant beyond all human beings, you shone brighter than the sun, you were exalted higher than the angels, more honorable than the Cherubim. You were not taken up into the heavens — you did not go up there, truly — but remaining here on earth, down here below, you drew the heavenly Master and King down to yourself. You pulled God down like a bolt of lightning. You did not go up to find Him there; you drew Him down. Your purity brought Him, your honor brought Him, your chastity, your humility — they brought Him down.

The Theotokos still keeps pressing the point. "How shall this be, seeing I know not a man?" In other words: I hear everything you are telling me, but I have no husband — how can this possibly happen? And here we have a response that makes sense — not only in doctrinal and religious terms, but in plain human reason as well. So listen first of all to the objection our Panagia raises, in her own words, about what we call the union of husband and wife.

"Joseph, sir, is my betrothed," my betrothed, mine, "not my husband," he was not given to me as a husband.

It went no further than betrothal, although the marriage arrangements had already been made. For, as you know, the Evangelist Luke writes that even on the day she went up there to give birth, Joseph went up with Mary, who was betrothed to him. He still calls her his betrothed on the very day she was to give birth.

"How then shall conception come to me without marriage?" You tell me that I will conceive and give birth to the One who will make, who will fashion all things? How? She is looking at things in human terms. "How shall I put forth fruit with no one to plant it?" If no one plants anything within me, how am I to bring forth fruit?

"Since with me, for the first time, a law of a strange manner of childbearing is found" — they're going to change, she says. The laws of nature? Are women going to give birth some other way now, from this point on?

"Teach me plainly, O angel." Say a couple of words so that I may understand. "Unfold your word to me, describe for me the manner of these sayings, interpret for me the power of your good tidings, that I may learn little by little." Just a little, open it up for me a bit, make it easier for me, "that I may learn how impossible things become possible, how things with no way can find a way," let me hear "how grace makes something new of nature."

Or how does nature serve grace? How is this thing going to happen here? The divine Chrysostom answers her in his own way, and tells her this: "Do not look for the sequence of nature." You are asking me for a man and a woman, "when what is taking place is above nature." What is going to happen will be above nature.

Because if it happens according to nature, we will have one more human being — a sick one, who needs a physician. We want you to give birth to God, Lady; you are not going to give birth to one more human being. Let me read it to you again: 'Do not seek, do not look for the ordinary course of nature. Since you have not known a man, when what is happening is above nature, do not look around for marriage and birth pangs.' You are thinking about a wedding, the wedding crowns, labor pains, suffering, and so on.

“When the manner of birth is greater than marriage”—this manner of birth is higher than marriage. “And how will this be,” she says, “since I do not know a man? And is it not precisely for this reason that it will be?” This happens precisely because you do not know a man; if you had known a man, it would not have happened.

"Since I know not a man" — for if you had known a man, you would not have been counted worthy to serve in this ministry. He is saying: we would not have called you to take this role if you had known a man. "You would not have been counted worthy to serve in this ministry, not because marriage is evil, but because virginity is better."

That is how Saint John Chrysostom answers her. Now I want you to know something else as well: Scripture says, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you.” The angel did not tell her how. She is the one who asks, “How?” How would I know, so as to tell you how? I wasn’t even sent to tell you how it would happen; I was sent to tell you what would happen.

"The Holy Spirit shall come upon you, and the power of the Most High shall overshadow you." How he will do it, I am not the Holy Spirit, nor am I anything above the Holy Spirit. I am a servant, I am an angel, and I have come to tell you.

Could the angel have explained it to her? Let us grant that he could. Could she have understood it? Certainly not. It is such a mystery, how will you ever understand it? That is the whole point. And this is an answer to many of us.

And this, even though we ourselves are walking mysteries. We have not solved a single thing about our own selves. Yet we go on demanding and asking what it is, in what manner the conception of the Virgin came about. And since it does not rest on our logic, on our education, on our science, we gladly reject it.

If from this pulpit I had the time to sit down and set each one of you, and myself as well, before the mystery, before the mystery of his own self alone, he would have to leave this place out of his mind. What have you solved, man, that you want to solve this? I put the question to you: how is it that I am speaking to you, and how is it that you are hearing? Tell me.

What I am going to say next, I do not know. Do I have some magnetic tape inside my head? One that unwinds and records onto your head, with your own recorder, onto that tape of yours? Because that is what some people claim.

There's a tape inside, they say, and it unwinds. But when does it do the recording — when did somebody record it? For a tape to speak, at some point you have to record on it. And that's how it works; it can't be anything else.

Is it possible, when you walk out of this hall and go downstairs, for you to say that Panagopoulos tonight insulted the President of the Republic? Can you say that, or can you not? Of course you can. You could say that he insulted the Archbishop, that he insulted the Patriarch. You cannot really say it.

Even though I never insulted him. You cannot say it. And yet you can say it. Who is that one inside you who took the scissors and cut the tape and added another piece, and did not say exactly the things that I am saying? And where does he live, in the nous, the spiritual intellect, in the heart, in the blood, in the hair, in the feet, where? Who has ever given an answer?

But you do not want to face that, my materialist friend. Read Solomon, who puts this question to you: “Tell me,” he says, “how are the bones formed in the substance of the mother’s womb?” For bones are not merely formed. They are divided and fitted together according to the work and service they are meant to perform.

Take your hand and look at it. Look how many joints, how many combinations begin from the upper arm and go on down. And you come all the way to here; look how many there are here. Who fastened them together? Who set them in place, some smaller, some larger, and all the rest of it?

Who joined all these together? Who made this heart of yours and started it beating? Who made the lungs? Who put the blood inside? Who made the intestines, attached them there and set them in place? Who made the throat? Who carved out your teeth? A tooth is hollow inside like a piece of macaroni; how is it that the nail does not hurt, even though it grows out from here? How? What have you done about it? How does your mother eat plain greens and produce milk? How does she drink dark red wine and produce white milk? How? Just tell me, so that I too may learn a little; let me put the question. And if every scientist were gathered together, all of them from every age, in these very specialties, they will describe it to us, but they will not reproduce it, they will not reproduce it.

We find ourselves in a field, in a vineyard, in an orchard—wherever you like. There in the orchard, let us say, is a bitter orange tree; there is a lemon tree; there is an orange tree; there is a vine—all dried up because of the drought.

The bitter orange tree takes the water and turns it into a bitter orange; the orange tree takes it and makes a sweet orange; the lemon tree takes it and makes a lemon; the olive tree takes it and turns it into oil — and it's the same water. The vine takes it and turns it into sugar, turns it into alcohol, turns it into this, and this, and this, and this. How does it do that? "Well, you know, the little roots..." Leave it, I know all that. You're going to describe to me how it happens, what goes on. Of course, the little roots of the plant draw up the water, and so on. But who tells them to? They have no life, they have no soul, they have no reason — so how do they work together, and how does this water get changed into all that?

We have solved nothing, my dear friends; I simply do not know. You may be wise, but I am speaking out of my own bewilderment. To me, these things are mysteries. Suppose I have ten bottles in front of me and take them to a chemist to tell me what is inside them.

“Come back in a week, and I’ll tell you.” Wait—I’ll tell you myself. This one is sour, this one salty, this one astringent, this one bitter, this one has… At once, this little membrane on my tongue gives me the answers immediately. How does it do that?

How did you work that out, my friend? What do you see with? With your eyes? Then how is it that when someone else goes by and greets you, you don't say hello back, and they take it the wrong way? "Look, you were looking right this way." "My mind can't have been there." How? You see with your nous, with your mind. The nous sees, and the nous hears.

And after all this, a man still wants to know how it happened. Perhaps you have it too, with the lily, or perhaps she has it, in the way the Most Holy Theotokos had it. Girls say this, women say this same thing, but it is only on that day.

So in this case I would like to tell you, concerning the conception, that it was not the Holy Spirit alone who accomplished it. The whole Holy Trinity accomplished it. Christ himself worked for the manger he was about to enter, and so did the Father, and so did the Holy Spirit.

This is what the Fathers say. And it is true, it holds. Listen to what Saint Gregory the Theologian thinks. The Son saw what the Holy Spirit was doing; he knew. The Son saw how he was preparing for himself his own spiritual dwelling place.

Christ himself, as the Word of God, the Logos, worked within the womb of his mother, fashioning the dwelling in which he would abide. And as he wills, he clothes himself in the form of a servant. The Father saw the Incarnation of the Only-Begotten, and the Father was there as well; for where the Holy Spirit is, there also is the Son, and where the Son is, there also is the Father. The Trinity is inseparable, the Trinity is undivided, the Trinity cannot be split apart.

Now listen to the reasoning. Just as in the beginning, when God was fashioning man, He called the Son and the Spirit to the work. He said, "Let us make man." And all three worked together. "Let us make man in our image, after our likeness." So it is now as well: now that the refashioning of man — his remaking — is taking place, the Holy Trinity is once again present, in a way beyond words. For as the fashioning was one, so the refashioning of that same creature is again one. The Holy Trinity fashioned man, and the Holy Trinity is refashioning him now.

In such a case, then, people ought to delve into the writings of the Fathers and read the texts of the Church, which would help them greatly. In any case, when he gave her several reasons—telling her that her kinswoman was in her sixth month, that nothing is impossible with the Lord, and so forth—she raised her hands and said:

Behold the handmaid of the Lord; let it be unto me according to thy word. She gave herself over.

When she gave her consent and accepted, the angel departed from her.

She gave herself over. How did she give herself over, and to whom? Listen to words that many people need today, both men and women.

“Behold the handmaid of the Lord. I stand here ready — ready and pure, a true virgin, honorable, with nothing standing in the way. My soul is eager, my womb is ready, for it has been kept untouched for the Fashioner alone, the One who formed us.” Who today stays pure, to be given to her husband?

And which man remains pure until his wedding, to be offered whole to his wife, honourable and upright? Behold the handmaid of the Lord: ready to obey, fit for service, prepared to receive. Be it unto me according to your word.

Behold the handmaid of the Lord, be it unto me according to your word. As a servant I lie before my Master's nod. I am ready for whatever you say. I lie like clay in the potter's hands. What do you want to make of me, a water jar, a pitcher? Whatever he will make of me, I am ready. As you will, with all authority, let your purpose be carried out in me. As you will, in your love for mankind, work in me the wonder of this astonishing movement. Be it unto me according to your word. Behold the handmaid of the Lord, be it unto me according to your word. I am like a painter's canvas, a white cloth for painting; let the painter paint whatever he wishes. Yet today, in truth, the girl who comes to her wedding is hardly a blank page any longer; others have written on her long before.

Let the Lord do whatever He wishes. "I am a tablet waiting to be written on; let the one who writes write whatever He wills." Let the Lord work His will in all things. These are the words of the Saints, and the Saints grasp the matter exactly as it truly is. Now, following on from these thoughts, I would like to answer the question of why Christ was born of the Holy Spirit.

As Saint Gregory Palamas says, if Christ, the Savior of the world, had been conceived in the natural manner, He would not have been without sin.

"In iniquities was I conceived," it says, "and in sins did my mother conceive me."

Every person who comes into the world comes as a sinner. He carries ancestral sin. So if it had been Abraham who sowed the seed, he would have brought forth a man, and the same with anyone else. Some people ask for an angel: why not send an angel to save the world? But an angel does not have life in himself. He only shares in life. What was missing from man? Life. Why? Because he had died. He was cut off from God the moment he disobeyed. Who has life? Where is life sold?

Where can you buy life? Nowhere. Life is God. And when Christ came into the world, Life itself came into the world, to offer life to man, who was dead. So it had to be God. And there was a particular reason. Why, some people ask, born of a virgin? Could it not have been some other woman? No, the same patterns were kept. As the disobedience happened, so also the obedience happened.

When did Eve speak with the arch-devil and do the damage? Had her husband known her yet? No. Eve, while still a virgin, conceived from the evil one and gave birth to death. Mary, while still a virgin, conceived from the Good One and gave birth to life.

Αν έλεγα ότι η μέρα του Ευαγγελισμού σαν εορτή είναι η μεγαλυτέρα εορτή και είναι η αφετηρία και η ρίζα όλων των εορτών, δεν θα ήμουν έξω της πραγματικότητος. Διότι πώς μπορεί να εορτάσεις γέννα αν δεν εορτάσεις σύλληψιν; Πώς θα εορτάσεις βάπτισιν, σταύρωσιν, ταφήν, ανάστασιν, εάν δεν προηγηθεί η σύλληψις;

Στη συνέχεια ο Άγγελος λέγει στην Παναγία μας μη φοβού Μαριάμ, μη φοβού Μαριάμ, διότι η Παναγία μας, όπως ξέρετε, διαλογίζεται και λέγει ποταπός ή ο ασπασμός ούτος Τι είναι αυτό το γλυκόλογο, όπως τα λέγαμε;

Πώς ουν χωρίς γάμου έσται μοι σύλληψις, που μου λες ότι θα συλλάβω και θα γεννήσω αυτόν που θα κάνει, που θα φτιάξει; Πώς; Τα βλέπει ανθρώπινα τα πράγματα. Πώς χωρίς φυτουργόν βλαστήσω καρπόν; Αν κάποιος δεν φυτέψει μέσα μου, πώς εγώ θα βλαστήσω καρπόν;

Επεί μοι πρώτῃ ο νόμος ξένης τριβής παιδοποιίας ευρίσκεται, θα αλλάξουνε, λέει. Οι νόμοι της φύσεως; Θα γεννάνε αλλιώς οι γυναίκες τώρα από εδώ και πέρα;

Παρότι εγώ δεν τον έβρισα. Δεν μπορεί να το πεις. Μπορεί να το πεις. Ποιος είναι εκείνος μέσα σου που πήρε το ψαλίδι και έκοψε την ταινία και πρόσθεσε άλλο κομμάτι και δεν είπε ακριβώς εκείνα τα οποία λέγω εγώ. Και πού κατοικεί αυτός, στο νουν, στην καρδία, στο αίμα, στα μαλλιά, στα πόδια, πού, ποιος έδωσε απάντηση;

Παίρνει το νερό η νεραντζιά και το κάνει νεράντζι, παίρνει η πορτοκαλιά, γλυκό πορτοκάλι, παίρνει η λεμονιά, κάνει το λεμόνι, παίρνει η ελιά, το κάνει λάδι — το ίδιο το νερό. Παίρνει το κλήμα, το κάνει ζάχαρο, το κάνει οινόπνευμα, το κάνει, το κάνει, το κάνει, το κάνει. Πώς το κάνει; Ξέρεις, τα ριζίδια... Άσε το, το ξέρω. Θα μου περιγράψεις πώς γίνεται, το τι γίνεται. Βέβαια, τα ριζίδια τούτου τραβάνε το νερό και λοιπά. Ποιος τα ειδοποιεί; Ζωή δεν έχουν, ψυχή δεν έχουν, λογικό δεν έχουν· πώς συνεργούν και πώς τροποποιείται αυτό;

Περάστε από μια βδομάδα να σας πω. Σταμάτα, να σου πω εγώ. Αυτό έχει ξινό, αυτό έχει αρμυρό, αυτό έχει τσιφό, αυτό έχει πικρό, αυτό έχει... Αμέσως αυτό το πετσί που έχω μέσα στην γλώσσα μου δίδει απαντήσεις αμέσως· πώς το κάνει;

Ιδού η δούλη Κυρίου· ετοίμη πρόκειμαι, ετοίμη μεν, καθαρή, γνησία παρθένος, τιμία, και κωλύον ουδέν. Η ψυχή πρόθυμος, η γαστήρ εύκαιρος, ανέπαφος γαρ μόνω τω πλάστη τηρουμένη. Ποια σήμερα μένει καθαρή να προσφερθεί στον άντρα της;

Κάθε άνθρωπος που έρχεται, έρχεται αμαρτωλός. Φέρει το προπατορικό αμάρτημα. Κατά συνέπεια, αν ήταν ο Αβραάμ αυτός που θα έσπερνε, θα έφερνε έναν άνθρωπο, ή οποιοσδήποτε άλλος. Ορισμένοι ζητούν άγγελο, γιατί να μην στέλνει έναν άγγελο να σώσει τον κόσμο; Μα ο άγγελος δεν έχει ζωή. Μετέχει της ζωής. Τι έλειπε από τον άνθρωπο; Η ζωή. Γιατί; Ότι απέθανε. Απεκόπη από τον Θεό άμα τη παρακοή. Ποιος έχει τη ζωή; Πού πουλιέται η ζωή;
